Obituary for Elizabeth Jessie Speare (Johnston)

SPEARE, Elizabeth (nee Johnston)
October 21, 1933 – October 17, 2018

Betty passed away peacefully at Wentworth Lodge, just days before her 85th birthday. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 52 years Walter (Bud) Speare, sister Margaret (Bunty) Jupp, and parents Richard (Dick) and Rachel (Dolly) Johnston. Daughters Christine (Rob) and Doreen will remember Mom as a role model with a terrific sense of humour and a lot of common sense. She was a voracious reader and enthusiastic walker who enjoyed travel, good food, her garden, and most card and board games. Perhaps her greatest joy came from her grandchildren: Jackson, and Pauline (Jolene) McCurlie; and Nick (Meg), and Nathalie van Vugt. Nana was their biggest cheerleader. She was hands-on, genuinely interested in their lives, and immensely proud of them at every stage. (She would have loved to have known the newest addition to the family: great-grandson Madden McCurlie!) Betty is also survived by brother-in-law John (Kathy) Speare and their family, as well as members from the Boates, Smillie, Kopysh, Edge and Jupp families. Betty was born in Montreal to British parents who moved back to England when she was 3. During WWII, between the ages of 6 and 12, she was evacuated to various homes. In her late teens, the family sailed back to Canada on the Franconia – this time, settling in Hamilton. After 30 years, she retired as contracts administrator at Westinghouse. It was here where she was introduced to a group of women who became dear friends. Of these, she will be missed most by Jean Carlin, her lifelong best friend (and “Aunt” to us). A special thanks to the entire staff at Wentworth Lodge for their care and compassion, not only during her palliative stage, but throughout her years there. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Alzheimer Society of Canada. At the family’s request, cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., on Friday, October 26th from 2-4 & 7-9pm. On-line condolences can be made to www.dermodys.com
