RENATE GOHLICH
October 5, 1925 – January 26, 2012
Passed away quietly after a long and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton. Beloved mother of Helga of Mississauga and Hans of Burk’s Falls. Loving grandmother to Sahrina, Justin, Ethan, Ryan and Tegan. Predeceased by her three siblings. Sadly missed by her many friends and family in Ontario, Alberta and Germany. Renate was born and raised in the former East Prussia until she was called into service in 1944 to train war horses. Post-war and via England she immigrated to Canada where she raised her family and worked in legal offices and for the Federal Business Development Bank. Her work took her to many locations in Ontario and Alberta. A refined lady whose depth of intellect and generosity of spirit attracted her many friends who appreciated her fierce independence, quick wit and brilliant sense of humour.
Renate had a unique ability to develop and maintain multi-generational friendships over great distances and long periods of time. She enjoyed nothing more than to share a glass with a good friend and engage in a challenging debate about life, love, politics or religion. She innately saw the good in everyone and always tried to do the right thing. Her love and deep appreciation of life, animals and nature is reflected in her quilts, her garden and her home. She saw beauty in every face, every sunset, and every cloud. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation, St. Peter’s Hospital or The Lincoln County Humane Society would be appreciated. Special thanks to Dr. David Clark, and Dr. Leyo Ruo at the Juravinski Hospital and Dr. Alan Taniguchi and all the wonderful and loving staff of 3 West, Palliative, at St. Peter’s. Memorial celebrations of life will take place in St. Catharines, Mississauga, and Germany at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to P.X. Dermody Funeral Homes, East Hamilton.
