Obituary for Francis (Frank) Joseph Duffy

DUFFY, Francis Joseph (Frank)
It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the sudden and peaceful passing of Frank Duffy on Monday, March 29, 2021 in his 88th year. Loving husband of Eleanor (nee Chiarot) for 65 years and adored and devoted father of Christine Lasebnik (Tim), Karen McDougall, Cathy McSweeney (Brian), Kelly Duffy- Kariam (Doug), Kimmy Day (Nigel) and Kevin (Lisa).
Cherished and precious grandfather of Jason, Melissa and Mike, Katie and Jennifer, Matthew, Melanie, and Mitchell, Philip and Elena, Courtney, Riley and Bryson and Conor. Great Frank to Layla, Shaydon, Story and Breukelen.
Loved brother-in-law to Alma Schneider (Paul), John Chiarot (the late Ruth), Isabel Nixon (the late George), and Louie Chiarot (Alice). Predeceased by his sisters Mae, Iris and Dorothy, and by his brothers Ans (Betty), John (Jean) and the Rev. Fr. Philip Duffy, and by his in laws Joe Chiarot (Margaret), Billy Chiarot, and Guido Chiarot (Bernice). Frank had a mischievous sense of humour and a real affection for the many family dogs.
Family, faith, youth sports, and community were most important to Frank, best known as “Duff”. He was the recipient of lifetime volunteer awards from both the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the City of Hamilton. More recently, Frank was honoured to receive the 2020 Irish Person of the Year award for outstanding community service. He also served as the Deputy and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 5860 and mentored the younger knights, the Squires.
He founded the Knights of Columbus free throw competition, the Our Lady of Lourdes Club basketball teams, and the Mohawk Athletic Baseball Association that grew to an amazing 700 athletes. He led countless fundraising initiatives.
Frank was a beloved coach for 40 years. He coached Lawfield and CYO hockey, basketball at both the elementary and secondary level, often simultaneously, and one of his favourite sports, baseball, as he was a former pitcher. He knew the value of youth being involved in sports and their community and that there are so many life lessons learned on the court, the ice and the field. Heaven has gained a new Coach
We have no doubt that he will continue cheering on his two favourite teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Hamilton Ti-cats from above.
Frank was a proud and dedicated employee of Stelco. He retired from the 10-9 Mill after 38 years of service.
Heartfelt thanks to EMS, ER and the Palliative Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their professionalism, care and kindness to our father, and our family. We will be forever grateful.
Due to COVID restrictions, the family will be having a private Funeral Mass to celebrate Duff’s life. Frank was a proud north ender and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Lawrence Elementary School (stla.hwcdsb.ca) or to the Catholic Youth Organization (cyo.on.ca)
We love you Dad. Thank you for always being our greatest teacher and biggest fan! Until we meet again.
