Obituary for Eugene Austin Fitzpatrick

FITZPATRICK, Eugene Austin
June 19, 1940 - January 14, 2023

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to our dearly beloved Poppa who passed suddenly at home as a result of heart failure. We were blessed to have his love, humour and enthusiasm as a husband, father, grandfather and dear friend. Loving husband to Christine (nee Thomas) for almost 60 years, predeceased by son Paul, dearly missed by daughter Lynn (Phillip) and son Kevin (Amber), grandfather to Katherine, Aaron, Mason, Tessa and Maggie, whom he cherished. Predeceased by his brother Larry and sister Muriel. He was “Uncle Gene” to Lizanne, Colleen and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Gene’s passions were his family, friends, neighbours, playing guitar, reading, the snooker league, golfing, the bowling league, duplicate bridge, cycling, summers at the family cottage in Sauble Beach, travelling worldwide, and going out for greasy breakfasts with dear friends. He played and later coached basketball, volleyball, baseball to many championships and was a member of the Veterans Service League and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Gene had a varied career with five years in the Royal Canadian Navy and nearly a decade at Stelco. While at Stelco, with a young family at home, he earned an honours BA and BEd qualifying him to teach for the Hamilton Catholic School Board for the next 27 years. He also started a successful business, Sportsmens Trophies and Billiards, running the business until his last hours.

His infectious love for life and wicked wit will live on in all of us.

We request that in lieu of flowers, a donation is made to the Hamilton Food Share or your favourite charity.
