Obituary for Germaine McKinney (nee Soucy)

Germaine McKinney (nee Soucy)

October 29, 1928 - February 15, 2022

It is with profound sadness, but grateful hearts for a life well lived, the family of Germaine McKinney (Soucy) announce her peaceful passing at St. Peter's Hospital in Hamilton on Tuesday, February 15, 2022.
Germaine was born in Trois Rivières, QC, eldest child of Denis and Azilda Soucy, moving shortly afterwards to St. John, NB where the family grew to 13.

Germaine leaves behind a great legacy of a massive family spread across the world.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob), children Donna, Michael, Paul and son-in-law Bruce (Smith).
Left to mourn her loss with so many great memories, much loved mother of Bruce (Ann), Susan (Martin), Brian (Lynn), Marie (Upson), Diane, David (Diane) and Tarnya.
Forever cherished and truly adored grandma of 21 and great-grandma of 21 more!

Germaine was also predeceased by her sister Terry (Berkopec), brothers Conrad, Freddie, Jackie, Jimmy, sisters-in-law Hermine and Doris and brother-in-law Frank as well as five infant siblings. Saddened by her loss are sisters Shirley (Edwin Stow) and Anne Marie (Bell).

At least 100 nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins knew how much mom loved to party and will also mourn her loss.

Germaine moved to Stoney Creek then Hamilton in the 1950's. A longtime resident of Stoney Creek and formerly of the Beach Rd. neighbourhood, where lifelong friendships were made as she welcomed so many through her open doors. Germaine was a proud mother of 8. A devout Catholic attending several Catholic churches but finding a home in the community of Holy Family Catholic church since 1988. She worked in the office at White Radio, until retiring in 1993, where she developed a knack for typing and even at age 93 used her keyboarding skills on her new iPad.

She loved to travel and quite often did so with her three sisters (the other 'Fab Four') and enjoyed exploring, shopping or finding the dance floor for a jive with them.

When reflecting on her life recently she remembered having so many great family gatherings, often including extended family and friends that became family. She valued faith, family and friends in that order always, but also having fun!

The greatest gift of all, mom was a skilled knitter and crafter, always keeping her mind, hands and heart busy with creating so many personal gifts from knitting, embroidery, sewing, quilting, card-making and even baking goodies so that no one was missed under the Christmas tree or on their birthday. She enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, doing crosswords to keep her mind sharp, playing card games and Scrabble or more recently Words with Friends, watching the Daily Mass always with rosary beads and a prayer book in hand. Her apartment was full of mementos and gifts from all over the world, but the most cherished things mom loved were the photos of her children and grandchildren.

Mom instilled in each one of her children and grandchildren to discover their talent and do it to the best of their ability. She taught us to be kind, be courteous but be adventurous - oh and never turn down a really good piece of dark chocolate! We are eternally grateful for all she made/shared with us and the lessons she's taught us as well as all the wonderful memories of time well spent - laughter, love and loyalty. She truly was our angel here on earth.

Our family is forever grateful for the special caring, amazing, strong and dedicated staff of nurses, doctors, social workers, cleaning and kitchen helpers at St. Peter's, the caregivers and staff of Hamilton Health Sciences, first responders, PSWs, priests and caregivers that mom has benefited from over the past few years. Her grocery and medication delivery services and housecleaner Shauna helped mom stay independently living in her apartment. We also want to thank mom's cardiologist team at Sullivan cardiology and other medical staff who helped save her life more than once.

Sleep well now, sweet and gentle mother...you will live in our hearts forever. We will thank God always for the gift of you.

In lieu of flowers and more in tune with mom’s generous heart, we would appreciate donations made to the Huntington Disease Society of Canada https://www.huntingtonsociety.ca or DeMazenod Door/Farm at http://demazenod-door.ca
