Peacefully in her 76th year on January 15, 2019, Helju passed away at Albright Manor with her daughters by her side. Helju was predeceased by her parents Alide and Aleksei Lehtsalu, brother Heino, son Kevin, niece Pamela and partner Albert Schlereth. Helju will be dearly missed by her daughters Trish Watson (John) and Daun Scocchia (Lino); and daughter-in-law Cindy Fitzgerald (Ken). Already missing Grammie’s smiles and hugs are grandchildren Jason, Michael, Matthew and Adrian. Helju will also be missed by her sister Niama Black (Larry) and nephew Sterling (Meghan); and sister-in-law Ann Rowe and nephews Kyp (Nina) and Corey.

Helju was born on July 24, 1942 in Saaremaa, Estonia and immigrated to Canada as a young child, eventually living many wonderful years in Thunder Bay, ON. She will be fondly remembered for her passion for gardening, her wonderful baking and love of music and dancing. Helju was a wonderful role model to her family, always facing challenges and adversities throughout her life with strength, courage and pride.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all of the wonderful 3rd floor (south) staff at Albright Manor for their compassionate and loving care of Helju in her final months. We would especially like to acknowledge their unwavering assistance and care to help Helju’s final hours be so peaceful, as well as the compassion and care that you provided us.

We would also like to thank Dr. R. Safranyos for all of your guidance and support throughout the years, as well as going above and beyond to always make Helju feel safe and supported.

As per Helju’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home (1919 King St. E in Hamilton, between Rosedale and Cochrane) on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 5 – 8 p.m.; and again on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1- 4 p.m. A private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario.
