Obituary for Italia Giardino (Memme)

Giardino, Italia (nee Memme)

Following a long life in her own home as was her fervent hope, Italia passed away peacefully on April 10, 2024 in her 97th year, following a brief stay in hospital. She was supported on her way to her eternal home by her loving family Anna Giardino, Sylvia Giardino, Juanita and Gregory Gledhill and treasured grandson Matthew whom she adored. Italia was predeceased by her husband Ernesto of 70 years, her parents Ernesto and Anna Memme, and her brother Ettore. Mourning his big sister is her dear brother Eraldo and sister-in-law Teresa, and sister-in-law Giannina Memme. Italia leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy, and Argentina. She will be sadly missed by many friends and neighbours.

Mom was a feminist it seemed before the word was invented. Courageously boarding a ship with her young daughter Anna and her brother Eraldo, she left her home and family in Rocca San Giovanni, Abruzzo, Italy to join her husband in Canada where she immediately set about raising her family and working full time at Allen Candy, the Cotton Mill and finally at Hayes Dana in Stoney Creek, working right up into her mid-fifties – rare for her time. Despite language barriers and learning the customs of a new country, she was determined to be an equal contributor to the household, serving as a true role model for her daughters.

Mom’s passion was baking, most often late into the night on Fridays and all-day Saturday after working a full week at the factory. In her beloved summer kitchen, she created the very best cakes and cookies. Mom learned to bake at a very young age memorizing and adapting recipes. She had a special talent for tasting baked goods and recreating them. Her meals were something to behold, pastas, meats, seafood, and pizza; made not only for her family, but also sharing with friends and neighbours too. She made her last pasta dough the day before entering hospital – kneading the dough far better than any machine could do.

We extend deep gratitude to the incredible home care team that supported her independence and wellbeing over the years – CBI PSWs Rona, Genia, Rahel, Angie and Paramed nurse Sarah, and in her final days the angels of the Palliative Care team at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Visitation will be held at PX Dermody Funeral Home, 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) on Sunday April 14, 2024 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (305 East 37th St.) on Monday April 15, 2024 at 10:30am. Interment will be at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations to MacKids or a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers are greatly appreciated.

We hold her forever in our hearts and are at peace as she has earned her rest.

Sogni D’oro Mama e Nonna.
