Obituary for Patrick Ashley Meuser

Sadly, we announce that Patrick died suddenly of an unintentional drug overdose in Hamilton, Ontario on October 11, 2022, made all the more difficult because he was alone when he left this world in the middle of that night.
Born in Palmerston, Ontario on November 24, 1977, Patrick was always an energetic, chatty, and curious child, especially in anything electronic (computers were much more basic back in the early 80’s.) He took computer courses when he was only 3 at the Hamilton Public Library, and that “ignited the fire” within him! He even did some programming for the Board of Education when he was 9. (One longtime family friend described Patrick as being “other-wordly” in his intelligence.)
Patrick was offered a job in NYC in ’99, computer programming on Wall street (and also worked with his Dad occasionally at CBS). It was in New York, unfortunately, Patrick became familiar with marijuana and street drugs. He would say, “They help me to get to sleep”. Pat returned to Hamilton with elements of psychosis, and he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. After that, he became passionate about “Cybernetics” which was difficult for most of us to wrap our heads around.
Patrick was followed by the community mental health team (ACT) here in Hamilton for 17 years. He was frequently in and out of lodging homes and had many admissions to St. Joe’s Mental Health mountain site. He always denied having mental health issues, and said the meds were contributing to him feeling “unwell.” He believed that the street drugs made him feel better.
Those who knew Patrick always described him as kind, polite, gentle soul. He would literally give people the shirt off his back. For the most part, Patrick liked to keep to himself; however, he always seemed to enjoy going to McDonald’s with his mom every Saturday afternoon. He’d have his “Quarter pounder with cheese and a large vanilla milkshake please!”.
Patrick is survived by his mother, Cathy Poole (Brian) of Hamilton and Robert Meuser (Kathrine) of NYC and younger brother Andrew (Claudia) and his niece Nicol, 11, as well as many cousins in N.C. and B.C. Private cremation has already taken place. Donations in Patrick’s name may be made to the Canadian or American Mental Health Associations.
