RITA MCKENNA (nee Hynes)
(1931-2023)
Beloved matriarch of the McKenna family, peacefully passed away at Macassa Lodge on April 27, 2023. Rita’s defining characteristic and lasting legacy was a profound love of family. From teaching at a one-room schoolhouse on Prince Edward Island, to decades leading her kindergarten class at Our Lady of Lourdes, Rita’s kindness, good humour, and inspiring strength of character were ever-present. She lived her life with grace and resilience, and never left home without the perfect shade of lipstick! She will be dearly missed. Rita is predeceased by her loving husband, Ernie (1994). Deeply loved and admired mother of Joe (Jennifer), Mark, Sheryl Dick (Chris) and Lori Moffatt (Jay). Deeply loved and devoted grandmother to Justin (Cate), Stephen (Christina), Adam (Avery), Lindsay (Cooper) and Shawn (Kristina). Great-grandmother to her treasured Charlie, and much loved Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Rita is predeceased by her sister and best friend, Jean (Blaise Boyd), and her brother, Emmett and Basil (Anna). She will be dearly missed by her brother, Earle, and her sister-in-law, Laura Brazel. Rita’s family is forever grateful to the incredible staff at Macassa Lodge, especially in A2, who treated her with warmth and compassion that we will never forget. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) on Monday May 1, 2023 from 4-8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday May 2, 2023 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
