Obituary for Sister Therese Messner

MESSNER, Sister Therese, (formerly Sister Stanese) School Sister of Notre Dame
Passed away in Waterdown, Ontario on November 25, 2022 at the age of 99 and in her 75th year as a School Sister of Notre Dame.

Predeceased by her parents, Matthew and Marie(Karl) Messner and her sisters, Hernesta Pepper, Doris Sleeper, Ruth Ann Schnurr and as infants, Matthew and Marie. Lovingly remembered by her religious community and relatives.

Prior to entering the convent Sister Therese specialized in studies which qualified her to be employed as an analytical lab technician in Sarnia. Following graduation from Hamilton Teachers’ College in 1948, she taught at schools in Waterloo, St. Louis, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Michael and at Sacred Heart School, Kitchener and St. Mary, Owen Sound. In 1965 she moved to Chepstow where she was principal at Immaculate Conception School. In 1968 she returned to Our Lady of Lourdes, Waterloo as principal and librarian. From 1974-1982 Sister Therese was principal at St. Patrick School, Caledonia. Following her position as maintenance supervisor at Notre Dame Village, St. Agatha, she moved to Saskatchewan, first as librarian at St. Peter School, Unity, then, as pastoral associate at St. Alphonsus Parish, Viscount and St. Joseph Parish, Oxbow. On her return to Ontario in 1993, she was in charge of the convent library in Waterdown until 2008.

Sister Therese’s pastime was tatting, crocheting and knitting. Also, she was an excellent seamstress. During her last weeks of illness, she continued to read the daily newspaper.

School Sisters of Notre Dame will celebrate the Ritual of Remembrance on Tuesday and the Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 10:30am. Due to COVID these celebrations will be limited, requiring registration. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Burlington, ON. Masks are required.
