Obituary for The Honourable Walter T Stayshyn

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of The Honorable Walter T. Stayshyn who passed away peacefully with family by his side on December 13, 2021. Walter is predeceased by his wife Katherine and daughter Katherine (Bunny), as well as his sister Eleanor and brother-in-law Morris Bosey. Beloved Dad to Ted (Erin), and cherished Grandpa to Matthew, Julia, and Caroline Stayshyn and Thomas, Joshua and James Newman. Walter is survived by his sister, Irene Stayshyn, nephews Justin Stayshyn (Rowan), Greg (Michelle) Bosey and niece Resa (John) O’Connor. He also leaves behind many cherished cousins and family members especially Sam and Sandy Matsos, who have been a tremendous support, as well as many friends. Special thanks to Dan Garcia who took such good care of Walter for the last 4 years and who became such an important part of his life. Walter was very fortunate to have caregivers like Dan and Laila who were like family to him. Thank you also to the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, especially the 6th Floor CTV North and the incredible nursing staff.

Walter had a passion for law, and spent his life doing what he loved. He received his BA from McMaster University in 1958, and graduated Osgoode Hall Law School in 1961 and then articled with John L. Agro QC. Walter was called to the Ontario Bar in 1963 and spent the early years of his career as a successful lawyer until he ended his career with the Superior Court of Justice as an esteemed judge for more than 35 years. A few of Walter’s achievements in law included Association with Agro Cooper Zaffiro Parente & Orzel, Founding Partner of Borkovich & Stayshyn, and the Director of Hamilton-Wentworth Legal Aid. Walter was also heavily involved in many community organizations as he was a fierce advocate of all things Hamilton. Some of these include Vice Chairman & Board of Governors member at Mount Mary Academy, Past Chairman of the Hamilton-Wentworth District Health Council, Past Chairman of Hamilton-Wentworth Legal Aid, Chairman and on the Board of Trustee’s at the St. Josephs Villa Foundation, Honourable Chairman of the Hamilton – Wentworth Multiple Sclerosis Carnation Campaign, a member of the McMaster Letterman’s Assn, Hall of Fame Selection Committee, among many others. His many honours included recipient of a McMaster University Letter: Football and Basketball, and recipient of the Queens Jubilee Medal in 2002. Walter’s greatest passion was his family and cheering on his grandchildren at their various sporting events.

Visitation will be held on Thursday December 16th, from 1-4pm & 6-9pm at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 796 Upper Gage, Hamilton. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday December 17th, at 10:30am at St. Ann’s Parish, 11 Wilson Street W, Ancaster (only masks required), followed by a burial at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Ancaster. A reception will take place following the burial. For those wishing to attend Visitation or Mass you must RSVP using the links below.
