Tassi, Irene (nee Volpini)
On October 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family, Irene was re-united
with her husband, grandson, parents and dearly departed friends. Irene's heart and her door were always open. From the wealthy and powerful to the most fragile and vulnerable, Irene Tassi (nee Volpini) welcomed any and all in search of counsel, support or love. Faith-filled, hope-filled and big-hearted, Irene was a life-line to the hundreds who graced her home. What greater gift could God give to us than the mother and Nonna God gave us. She treasured every moment with her husband of 53 years, Philip Tassi, who predeceased her (August 16, 2006). She looked forward to the day she would be reunited with him and join her cherished grandson, Carson Blake. She is survived by her loving children Peter (Sharon), Dale (Kevin), Philip, and Filomena (Jim), and wonderful grandchildren Philip, Kera, Peter (Geraldine), Frank, Maria and Matthew and by sisters Mary Delsey and Rose Volpini-Hand and sister-in-law Rosaline Rocchi. Irene was predeceased by her loving parents, Delia and Ferdinando Volpini, brother Anselmo Volpini, and sisters-in-law Mary, Francis, Laura, Lina and Veronica Tassi, Nellie Caiazzo, Anne Ranalli and brothers-in-law Jack, John, Guido and James Tassi, and John Rocchi. She had a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews. A woman ahead of her time, Irene worked as an elementary school secretary for the Hamilton Separate School Board. Later she volunteered for Aldermen, MPPs, MPs and worked as Executive Assistant to the Honourable John C. Munro, federal cabinet minister. She worked tirelessly for the rights of all Canadians. She was a caring ear and an advocate for the forgotten and ignored. Irene set exceptionally high standards for herself and wasn’t satisfied until she met them. Irene balanced all of this with her sacrificial love for her children and friends. Her greatest joy was being able to make others happy, which she often did with her warm hospitality and amazing meals. Irene’s big-heartedness was reciprocated in the care and treatment provided by the expert and loving staff of Emmanuel House Hospice. We wish to extend our deep gratitude to Emmanuel House, as well as doctors: Tony Kerigan, De Le, Pierre Major, Tim Whelan and Samantha Winemaker.
Family will receive visitors at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 1919 King Street East on Tuesday, October 15th from 4-7pm. Vigil prayer on Tuesday at 630pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 128 Edgemont St. S., on Wednesday, October 16th at 11am. Burial to take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Emmanuel House Hospice and Rygiel Supports for Community Living would be deeply appreciated. On-line condolences can be made to

So sorry Filomena to learn of your mother's passing. Such a sad time to lose your mother leaving you an adult orphan. And at such a busy time for you. We wish you comfort in knowing that she made such a difference in life.

Our hearts break for your loss, Filomena. We have walked this walk and know your pain and loss. What a wonderful obituary and a fabulous life your Mom lived. So many accomplishments, caring for others and giving of herself. A wonderful mentor for all of your lovely family. Know that we are thinking of you today and in the days ahead. May the strength of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ give you peace. May the love and comfort of friends and family console you at this difficult time. Blessings to you always.

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry: I am not there. I did not die. -Mary Elizabeth Frye
